Last Friday (13/03/09), I finished reading this book. It was sad to learn how miserable their life was.
The book revealed how Afghanistan fell and how the "jihad" took over the contry. It revealed the author struggles in the country.
But she did not suffer the same fate as most girl living there. She came from a priviledged family. Her parents doted them and they were dressed modernly. They attended royal school, life seems like a bed of roses for them at least at that time.
They grew up like normal children, till one fateful day communist took over and russians invaded, gradually the government fell, and that when their life is going to change forever.
Initially her father refused to leave the country despite chaos and communist ruling the country. It was the captured of her brother plus the constant bombing that changed her father's mind. They left for Pakistan first. Pakistan was a place of refugees, but too over-crowded.
People from affect areas all flee to Pakistan. They have to adapt their new found life in Pakistan, and for the author a new kind of freedom is awaiting her.
She must learn to follow the rule lay down for women or bear the consequences. Her family stayed there for a year and left for Canada.
Apparently her father has applied for asylum in Canada a year ago, and now it's time for them to leave the country they love and hate gradually.
Once again, they have to adapt to life in Canada, new culture, new language and new lifestyle. But with safety and freedom finally on hand, they embrace their new country happily.
Life set into place for them in Canada, when a guy approached her to make a film of the people living in Pakistan.
She agreed without hesitation. She hope to use this opportunity to find her best friend, but her friends had took her life years ago.
She came to learn of the truth, and the film was a success. Along the journey, she re-discovered the country she once loved dearly.....................
