Meena - Heroine of Afghanistan

I finished reading this book yesterday. I start to agree with what my English teacher used to comment about my reading preference. Indeed, I notice that I read a lot of books detail about women. I have lost track of the number of books I’ve read, but what I’m certain that mostly it reflect the suffering of women, especially at Muslim dominance country.

Apparently, women in those countries are heavily suppressed. But this book is slightly different in a way, it detail about how one woman believes in delivering women from suppression, and her name is Meena.

But a pity that her life ended when she’s 30, apparently by a traitor from her organization – RAWA. I admired her courage and determination to deliver them even facing the adversity from certain women and the government.

The beginning talks about her initial life and her view to a better country for women. I would say she was blissfully blessed with a supportive family, but at the same time she also came face to face with her beloved father abusing her mother and stepmothers.

Her father doted Meena a lot, and he constantly mentioned that she’s his heart. She knew her father loved her, but she also knew that man treats their woman harshly, and she felt indignant about it.

Fortunately, her father believed that education is important to his children, including daughters. So Meena got to attend school which is a privileged deprived from girl in her country.

But one day the country her country became chaotic, and different political groups start to create tyrant around the places, and gradually girls are forced out of schools and works.

With all the women’s suffering going around her, Meena started a woman group short name as RAWA. Her belief is that education is the key to political stability and peace as well as equal right to women.

Initially her group was small, but with time proven by her devotion and effort, it’s swelled to a large organization.

And eventually she went to Europe countries to highlight the plight of women in her country.

Her work was numerous and great, despite making little progress in changing women’s lives but she still stood firm to her organization believing strongly that the day will come.

But she would not seen it, for a cruel day in 1980s stole her away, but her friends and believers still carrying on her work – freeing women from the clutches of their abusive men……….
