Sunday (19/04/09), I stayed up late to finish reading this book. I was hooked up to know the ending, and after reading the whole story, I must say she really endured so much hardship to gain freedom, and it’s something that I can’t empathize but sympathize with her plight. I can’t imagine building my life with the man I thought should give me happiness, just to realize years later the same man is going to give me a hell lot of hardship. Comparing, my spiraling downward marriage is peanut……
Not without my daughter talked about an American’s mother trying to escape with her daughter out of the clutch of her Iranian husband, trapping them in the Iran.
Her husband, called Moody tricked them into going to Iran for a 2 weeks vacation in 1984, but when the “vacation” was supposing to be over, he refused to let them returned.
And there’s just one problem – legallyn and automatically they are Iranian citizen, as long as you married an Iranian, and they can’t leave without him, or his written permission.
She was desperate but yet at the same time powerless to fight back. She suffered weeks of torment before she woke up and realized that in order to escape this hellish place and the man she loathed so deeply, she must be strong.
She started her campaign of escaping by trying to seek help from the embassy, but they too are powerless to help, as her husband has controlled their Iranian and American passports. They did managed to replaced their American passports but there’s 1 major obstacle – the permission to leave Iran with her daughter.
Apparently for Betty (the American’s mother) to leave Iran was relatively easy. She could seek refuge from the embassy, and very soon she could return under the pretext of divorcing Moody but their daughter, Mahtob under Iran law. It stated that child belong to the father’s custody.
Trapped and trepidation of the man she used to love, she need to concoct a plan to escape with her daughter. Betty knew that she definitely can’t escape through legal mean, she sought alternatives, but firstly she need to loosen Moody grip on them.
She pretended to be a docile Muslim wife, gradually gaining his trust for her bit of freedom venturing out of the house unsupervised. During those “unsupervised” trips, she encountered a helpful shop owner – Hamid, and he agreed to help her by allowing her to use his phone to call her parents in US.
Through sympathy and words spread about their plight, more help came but they proved to be futile either powerless to help escape with Mahtob (no one is willing to help escape with child) or lack of resources, nevertheless their encouragement strengthen her morally.
In a twist of luck, she got to know Ahmal, who can help her escaped with Mahtob, but he needed time to sort out a full proof plan. Meanwhile, Betty’s father became gravely ill, prior to that she already learned that her father suffered from cancer.
She was worried sick, and shockingly Moody allowed her to return US without Mahtob, and also wanted her to liquidate their assets then transferred the money to Iran. But Ahmal has another worried, he vehemently urged Betty never to return to US without Mahtob, else she will surely never to see her again. Betty tried to buy time, but she could not.
Knowing that thing has become urgent, Ahmal arranged for them to travel to Turkey via road. He even taught Betty how to answer Moody and buy time from him.
Soon they were on a risky road to Turkey, and through the odds they met along the way, they finally set foot on Turkey, and seek help from US embassy.
After held captive in Iran for 2 years, Betty and Mahtob reached US, and get to spend time with her father before he passed away peacefully in August 1986.
P.S.: Betty and Mahtob have assumed a new identity and now living in an undisclosed location in US out of fear that Moody will spirit Mahtob back to Iran.
