Book - Burned Alive

I rented this book (Burned Alive by Souad) last friday(17/10/08). I've returned it on Monday (20/10/08).
After reading this book, mixed emotions washed over me. Humanity can be crueled. I can never visualise how one can torch their own relative. It was inhumane.
The story talked about this young girl called Souad who lived in the west bank, village. She was illiterate, and women in the village can only hope for marriage. They are under the law of men, no freedom or education. They work liked slaves. That's the life of women.
Men ruled over them, and the only way to cleanse their "sin", if they did, is death. They believed only death can cleanse the family of the sin the girl has made. They called it honor killing. It's always a man who carries the act.
So Souad committed pre-marital sex, which is deemed as very sinful, so death is expected for her. She knew her fate but there was no escape for her, but what she never knew was the method they deployed, and when.
So while she was washing family clothes, her brother in law came, while talking to her, he poured gasoline onto her head, instantly he set her on fire.
Fortunately, she survived, but with 3rd deg burn, and she was left to death in the hospital. If not for the help of an aid worker, I believed she would has died in the hospital.
It's a taboo to even bring up the subject.....Souad was actually awaiting her "fate".
The story makes me realised I'm fortunate to stay in a modern country, where freedom is take for granted. It's made me feel love, and pampered. It makes me not to dwell on my misfortune, and widen my horizon.
Reading is a joy, as it's open your thought. My favorite pastime reading never fail to enlighten me.
