War Child - Juliet Lac

This book talked about a vietnamese woman after enduring years of hardship in a war torn country and disharmony family, finally a communist country, ended up in America to find a new life.

Her plight highlighted the suffering of the women and children in general about how war can disrupt everything. It all started in her family. Her father was serving as a soldier during early vietnam when the non-communist and communist battled. Since her childhood life hadn't been a bed of roses, her father neglected and very abusive towards her mother. I would say she witnessed alot of violent at home.

Eventually her father was killed during the war, and communist too has taken vietnam, and now we know vietnam is still a communist country. Life under communism is very tough, and her mother finally secured 2 seats to get to Malaysia by taking fish boat.

Almost reaching Malaysia, the boat capsized and out of 350 passengers only 100+ survived. Not to mention that they have travelled for 7 days & 8 nights, mostly without water or foods. They stayed in the the Malaysia refugee camps for 7 months before they got to America where they start a new life.

But life in America proved to be a struggle to her. She seems to find no real sense of belonging but better in vietnam.

After decades of struggling to fit into a foriegn country and hunting past memory, her life finally began to take shape.

After reading her book, I seriously sympathize war torn family, especially children. Their will is indeed strong.............
