I finished reading this book last week. It's about the lives during Japanese occupation in the S.E.A.
The author illustrates the lives of her great-grandmother & mother living in China & Hongkong.
Her great-grandmother was of Japanese & German descendents. She came to live in China at a young age, cos in Japan they despise mixed descendents and especially unmarried woman.
Life for her great-grandmother wasn't rosy, till she met her future husband (an Englishman). He courted her and they got married soon after.
Life was luxurious for them, till they the Japanese invaded Hongkong. By then, everywhere was chaotics and life was strictly adhered to Japanese rule.
After enduring 3 over years under Japanese occupation, they finally regained their freedom. Those not of Hongkong parentage is free to choose where they would like to be relocated.
The author's parents chose Australia as their new "beginning". But the author's father decided to stay behind, helping Hongkong to rebuild basic infrastructure, promising to meet them in Australia. A pact was sealed.
The rest prepared their departure for Australia, full of dream to start afresh in a "promising" country.
But when they reached Australia, the family was rejected due to the "White Australia Policy". They discriminate them for their mixed heritage, and they have to settle in Birmingham temporary.
Eventually, they managed to get residency in Australia. In between, they were lot of twist and turn, but they managed to get to where they started initially.......
